Want to Change the World?

2026 has arrived, ushered in across the globe with the usual fanfare and celebrations typically associated with bidding farewell to the old and embracing all the possibilities that a fresh start might offer as we face the next 12 months of possibilities.

For many of us, it’s a perfect moment to assess our lives and behaviors. What is it that we don’t like? What do we want to change? How would we like to improve?

We typically seem to zero in on one thought, be it weight loss, or physical fitness, or possibly even giving up alcohol. We make our New Year’s resolution and do our best, seeing to it that we remain faithful each and every upcoming day. Or do we?

What eventually happens? Come on. Let’s be honest. For most of us, that resolution fades over time, forgotten into the memories of yesterday. Who among us can even recall in July or August what New Year’s resolution we made back on January first?

So, how do we make this New Year’s resolution different, one that will count once and for all? One that will stand the test of time. One that will finally change our behavior, unshackle us from bad habits and place us on a pathway of improvement.

While I wish I had the answer, a few thoughts do come to mind.

Decide on something that’s realistic and achievable for you given your circumstances and lifestyle. Perhaps it’s based on a gradual progression of milestones over the weeks to come rather than taking a “cold turkey” approach on day one.

Have you included ways to reward yourself throughout the process? Positive reinforcement can go a long way in helping you remain on course.

Find a friend or several others who are willing to embrace and share the same resolution goal with you. Knowing that you’re not alone in tackling the challenges you face from the lifestyle changes associated with your resolution can truly be empowering. Remember, you’ll always find strength in numbers.

And what about reminders? Be sure to place a few sticky notes around the house or your office to help you stay focused on pursuing your goals.

Above all, don’t throw in the towel if you find yourself taking a drink or devouring that piece of cake on January 3rd. Get back up in the saddle. Tell yourself you can do it and re-commit yourself to the resolution you’ve chosen. After all, we’re all human, constantly striving for what is good, what brings happiness, dignity and peace.

So, what’s your New Year’s resolution for 2026?

You know, any resolution is akin to conversion where you intend to turn something around 180 degrees. Imagine what our world would be like if only a majority embraced a New Year’s resolution focused on improving our personal ability to show kindness, understanding, respect, and empathy to others. Imagine its impact and how it would dramatically change our world.

A change that can begin with a simple resolution. Want to change the world?

Happy New Year!
